Be enchanted by the beauty, life and tranquillity of the world’s oldest surviving tropical rainforests and enjoy a truly sustainable eco holiday experience in Cairns and Great Barrier Reef.
Over 97 per cent of land in Cairns and Great Barrier Reef is protected including areas in the Daintree rainforests to the north, the tropical Atherton Tablelands, Kuranda to the west and Mission Beach to the south.
Cairns and Kuranda form the tourism hub of the Wet Tropics offering a variety of eco-tourism activities. This small region takes in the Barron Gorge National Park and straddles the ranges between the Cairns urban area and Kuranda Village which is set high in the hills surrounded by rainforest featuring the world famous Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.
Thanks to boardwalk access, you can guide yourself or join a tour through much of the Rainforest found in Cairns and Great Barrier Reef - Living museums rich with thousands of flora, fauna, species of marsupials, reptiles, birds and butterflies that have survived natural disasters and climate change for over 135 million years.
Swim, paddle and explore crystal-clear rivers, volcanic lakes and spectacular waterfalls surrounded by Wet Tropics rainforests on the tropical Atherton Tablelands; a short drive west of Cairns.
Or journey a little further south towards Mission Beach and you might come face to face with an endangered Southern Cassowary, who’s numbers are fewer in the wild than Giant Pandas but whose existence is vital to more than 120 different species of plants and wildlife.

Various rainforest accommodation and tour providers generate their own electricity, water, organic food and produce, and use sustainable practices to ensure your rainforest experience generates lots of memories but leaves only footprints.
Most rainforest resorts, lodges and even B&Bs have day walks and evening tours for guests and visitors to join, or they can connect you with other guided day and/or night rainforest and wildlife tours to catch a glimpse of tropical wildlife foraging, flitting, and occasionally fighting in their natural habitat.
