Welcome to Mission Beach, Australia - An unspoilt tropical paradise of World Heritage-listed rainforest, golden, sandy beaches and the closest departure point to the Great Barrier Reef, Dunk Island and Bedarra Island.
One of Cairns and Great Barrier Reef’s best kept secrets, Mission Beach is a two hour, 140 kilometre drive south of Cairns international and domestic airport. You can get to Mission Beach by driving along one of the Great Tropical Drive trails or from Townsville.
The 14 kilometre coast of Mission Beach is made up of three named beaches; South Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and Bingil Bay.
Traditionally a quiet seaside town, Mission Beach is sometimes referred to as the “Cassowary Coast” in recognition of the largest population of the critically endangered Southern Cassowaries, who reside here.
Mission Beach is the only place on the east coast of Australia where you can set sail in the sand and on the sea and is also the ideal location to get your heart pumping with adventure activities like skydiving, wind surfing and white water rafting available in the area.

In contrast to its heart pumping thrills, the relaxed pace and tropical lifestyle of Mission Beach makes it a great place for all travellers to visit. Stretches of flat, golden beach are patrolled by lifesavers and a range of activities including beach volleyball, sea kayaking, bicycle riding, and snorkelling as well as a variety of accommodation from luxury 5-star resorts, and family friendly apartments, to caravan parks, camping grounds and cheerful backpackers hostels, all make Mission Beach an ideal place to take in the sights and sounds of the tropics.
As well as Dunk Island and Bedarra Island, Mission Beach is also the closest departure point in the Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region to Hinchinbrook Island, the largest National Park island in the world where you can take dugong spotting tours, hike wilderness trails or paddle in a sea kayak on the Great Barrier Reef. The outer-Great Barrier Reef - where you can dive, snorkel and swim with thousands of bright fish and coral is only 21 nautical miles off Mission Beach.
Enviable average daily temperatures rarely drop below 25 degrees celsius in Mission Beach and thanks to Mother Nature’s generosity; water restrictions don’t apply here.
