Exotic tropical fruit comes in all shapes and sizes – some are hairy, others have bumps or sharp spikes. Often the most unusual fruit turns out to be the most delicious. You experience fruit with names like ‘chocolate pudding fruit’ and ‘crème caramel’.
Most people will have never heard of most fruit on the tasting menu. Here are some of the fruit we grow – abiu, black sapote, breadfruit, carambola, canistel, chempadek, durian, grumichama, , jaboticaba, jackfruit, mamey sapote, marang, mangosteen, pommelo, rambutan, rollinia, roseapple, santol, salak, sapodilla, soursop, sweetsop.
Many of these fruits will never be sent to market. They are too fragile to transport or do not keep well – they need to be eaten where they are grown, fresh from the tree. Cape Tribulation is the only place in Australia where you can find and taste many of these fruit.
The menu is constantly changing – but there are ALWAYS TEN fruit on the menu. The menu changes with the season, as well as on a daily basis, depending on what fruit is available and ripe. You could do the tasting four times a year and have a completely different experience each time.
The tasting is more than ‘just a plate of fruit’. It is a professional and entertaining presentation, by very knowledgeable guides, with a focus on learning about the fruit – how it grows, how to know when to pick it, how to prepare it, how to eat it, stories on the history and how different cultures use the fruit. The tour lasts 1 ½ hours (including the orchard walk)
The tour includes a half hour walk through the orchard. The orchard has more than 2000 fruit trees from the Amazon, Borneo and the Caribbean, and over 150 different species, so you get to see the trees the fruit come from.
