Fishing Cairns

"If you can't catch it in Far North Queensland - Its probably not worth catching!"

A throw away line for sure, but it does help to emphasise the incredible array of fishing options available to the visiting angler.

Whether your goal is to land a "grander" black marlin out from the continental shelf, or Australia's premier light tackle sportfish, the famous barramundi up the creek, or a prime-eating reef dweller from the largest fish attractor on the globe, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, we cover the lot.

Heavy tackle game fishing, light tackle sport fishing, saltwater or freshwater lure and fly fishing - Fishing Cairns can organise the fishing holiday of your dreams.

Calm Water Estuary Fishing: Only 5 minutes from the heart of the beautiful city of Cairns and you will be treated to some of the best natural scenery and fishing conditions available in Tropical North Queensland. Imagine fishing the upper reaches of the Trinity Inlet (Cairns Harbour) surrounded by lush greenery, rainforest clad mountains, and one of the worlds most diverse and productive ecosystems.

Calm Water River Fishing: Within an hour and a half drive from the city of Cairns flows some of the finest tropical waterways to be found anywhere in the world. These rivers rise in the Northern Great Dividing Range and flow majestically through ancient rainforest up to 125 million years old. Our skilled guides will take you to some of the best fishing locations in the Wet Tropics coastal lowlands where the estuarine crocodile - the last remaining dinosaur - can be readily viewed.

River / Estuary Lure & Fly Fishing: For the more experienced (or keen at heart) lure and fly fishing in our magnificent jungle clad rivers and mangrove lined estuaries is the way to go. These sole charter options are tailor made to suit your angling skills and target species. With the assistance of our experienced guides, you will be taken to the best fishing locations in Tropical North Queensland. Extended charters and remote locations available. See our Fly Fishing section for more info.

Fresh Water Lure & Fly Fishing: Many keen lure & fly fishing enthusiasts come to the Cairns region with the expectation of landing Australia's premier light tackle sport fish, the highly prized barramundi, or a trevally (GT or golden), a jack, a queenfish or even a salmon - and most will target these species in our magnificent World Heritage listed tropical tidal rivers and estuaries. Nothing wrong with that, but what should not be overlooked however, is the spectacular light tackle (3-6kg spinning or #6/7 fly) fishing available in the upper reaches or these fresh water rivers & streams.

Light Tackle Sports Fishing: The Cairns section of the Great Barrier Reef is internationally famous for its prime Black Marlin fishery. What should not be overlooked however, is the incredible array of light tackle sportsfishing options. Almost every species of Pacific game fish inhabit the plankton and bait fish rich waters off Cairns, adjacent to the reef and continental shelf. Imagine trolling rigged baits or deep diving minnow lures for the likes of wahoo, spanish mackerel, yellowfin tuna, dolphin fish (Mahi Mahi), barracuda, scaly mackerel, various trevally and sailfish.

Reef Fishing : Cairns is the closest major port to the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, arguably the greatest fish attractor on earth. Reef fishing is commonly called "Bottom Bouncing" where anglers using heavy 60-100lb handline techniques target such prized eating fish as coral trout, red emperor and nannygai. This style of fishing is not for every one but gives the angler the best possible chance to catch these superb fighting and tasty fish.

Heavy Tackle Game Fishing: The Cairns region has long been recognized as the Black Marlin capital of the world with the area stretching from Lizard Island in the north, to just south of this beautiful modern tropical city, the envy of many fisherman, and regularly rated the number one gamefishing region on the planet. The mere mention of the name Marlin conjures up a vision of the most splendid of creatures. Glistening and shimmering through the air on a gigantic leap from its blue ocean home, thrashing the ocean surface wildly and powerfully as it tries to rid itself of that intruding offering connected by a spindly thread to the anglers screaming reel.

Extended Charters & Cape York : Tropical North Queensland boasts some of the last remaining wilderness fishing opportunities in Oz. You will be absolutely amazed at the clarity of the waters, the wilderness experience, and the diversity of life with its uninhabited islands, wilderness coastline, pristine rivers and of course one of the seven natural wonders of the world - Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Sometimes just being there is rewards enough, and then we have the fishing.

At Fishing Cairns we understand the needs of the visiting angler and can cater to the most discerning of fisherman (or woman). The owners have been in the bsuiness for over 20 years and in fact, still fish almost every weekend. We use only the best guides and skippers in the region who are dedicated to ensuring your day out on the water gives you the best chance of success.
